Local tip
Make sure you bring a camera and a bottle of water so you can wander as long as you'd like and take photos of amazing scenery.

Situated at the south of Thang Long citadel, the Temple of Literature is about 10 minutes away from Hoan Kiem Lake. It was the first university in Vietnam that functioned for more than 700 years, from 1076 to 1779 with the architectural design of Ly and Tran dynasties.

This beautiful historic building with a fascinating design is an ideal spot for those who want to learn more about Vietnamese history, culture and architecture. The place is not really a temple but a huge compound with fascinating lakes, courtyards, a museum and many more things to see. If you want to find a peaceful place to sit back and rest, the lush green ancient trees and well-trimmed lawns are perfect to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The temple has always been on the 'must-see' list for anyone who visits Hanoi. You will also see many Vietnamese students coming here to pray for good luck on the next exam! It's the tradition!
