Description

Batik Wax Drawing & Indigo Dyeing Workshop (6–7 Hours) This unique cultural experience invites you into the home of a local Hmong family to learn the traditional art of batik wax drawing and indigo dyeing. Over the course of 6–7 hours, you will create your own hand-drawn fabric, enjoy a homemade lunch, and immerse yourself in Hmong textile traditions, from wax-resist design to embroidery techniques. Itinerary 09:00 AM – Welcome to My Home The day begins at my home in Sapa, where you will be warmly welcomed and introduced to the program. After a short introduction to Hmong culture and textiles, I will provide you with a piece of white fabric. You can either draw your own design or follow a traditional Hmong pattern as inspiration. Using hot beeswax and a traditional tool, you will carefully paint your chosen patterns onto the fabric. This process, known as batik, creates a wax-resist design that will later interact with natural indigo dye. 10:30 AM – Wax Drawing Session As you draw, I will guide you step by step on how to hold the tool, apply the melted wax, and create different motifs. The designs can be simple geometric shapes or more elaborate Hmong symbols, each carrying cultural meaning. This meditative process allows you to connect deeply with the craft while creating a unique piece of art to take home. 12:30 PM – Lunch at My Home After completing your wax designs, we will enjoy a homemade lunch together at my home. This is a chance not only to taste delicious local food but also to share stories and learn more about daily life in Sapa. 01:30 PM – Embroidery Lesson While we wait for the fabric to absorb the indigo dye, I will teach you the basics of Hmong embroidery. For about two hours, you will learn how to prepare the thread, practice traditional stitches, and create small embroidered patterns. Embroidery is an important part of Hmong culture, used to decorate clothing, household textiles, and ceremonial garments. This hands-on practice will give you an even deeper appreciation of the skill and patience behind Hmong textiles. 03:30 PM – Indigo Dyeing & Wax Removal After embroidery, it will be time to check on your batik fabric. I will prepare a pot of boiling water to remove the wax, revealing the beautiful patterns you created earlier. The indigo dye will have penetrated the fabric except where the wax resisted it, leaving your design in striking contrast. This final step is always exciting, as each piece comes out with its own unique character. 04:30 PM – Take Your Fabric Home By the end of the workshop, your finished indigo batik fabric will be ready to take home as a special keepsake of your time in Sapa.
